Adoption Information

Thank you so much for thinking about adopting an Akita, as we have many wonderful dogs that need homes!

To protect our Akitas and optimize the adopter/adoptee match, there is an application process that must be completed. Though we realize the adoption application is long, it is imperative to making a proper match and we ask for your understanding, patience, and cooperation during the process. Please know we're not trying to make it difficult for you to save an Akita's life, we promise. We do, though, have an obligation to do everything we can to minimize the number of placements that do not work out, as each unsuccessful placement is traumatic for the Akita. A thorough evaluation of the potential adopter, as well as the available Akitas, is the best way to accomplish a great match.

The general process is to fill out an Adoption Application and submit it to Rachel Peeples, DVM, or Sheri Geeza. You can also print it out and fax it to 912-876-3358 or 336-992-3759. Once received, it will be reviewed and any questions or concerns will be thoroughly addressed. Your responses to the application questions will help us find an Akita that will be the best fit for your individual situation. Once the application has been approved, a home check will be performed. This is an integral part of the process, and also gives you the 'face-to-face' opportunity to ask us any questions or raise any concerns. Once the home check is complete and the final approval given for the adoption, our Adoption Contract will be signed and a trial period of 2 to 4 weeks will be initiated to see if the Akita will indeed fit into the new household. The adoption will be finalized once the trial period has been successfully completed. Assuming all goes well and in a timely fashion, it takes about 6 to 8 weeks from start to completion of the adoption process.

Adoption Fees - $275

All of our Akitas are up to date on their vaccinations, are heartworm negative, and are spayed or neutered, and you will receive a six-month supply of heartworm preventive to help keep your dog healthy. Our standard adoption fee is $275, except for special needs dogs in which case the fee will vary but will always be less. The adoption fee is to help pay for the medical costs associated with the Akita in question, although medical costs nearly always exceed the adoption fee. Donations are always welcome above and beyond the adoption fee.
