Breed: Akita
Sex: Female.
D.O.B.: 2006
HW: Negative, on preventative
Vacs: Current.
Current Location: Friendsville, TN

Larceny has made quite a journey to her present location in Middle Tennessee. Originally, she lived in Florida, but was about to be sent to the pound due to her owners' divorce. A kind person took her in, and she was spayed courtesy of ARSF. The next step in her adventure was to come to Tennessee when her foster caregiver moved from Florida. Can you provide the last leg of her journey, to a loving and permanent home?

Larceny is two years old, and is current on all her vaccinations, is heartworm negative, and is on Heartguard, as well as flea and tick preventative. She is housebroken and seems to get along well with other dogs, having lived wih a bulldog, poodle, and mastiff. She has not been evaluated for her behavior toward children.

If you are interested please contact Jacquie at the email address above for additional information.

Kila

"Please help me find a home"

Tracking Number: CL02110800
Date Listed: 2/11/08
Breed: Akita/GSD Mix
Sex: Female.
D.O.B.: 2006
HW: Testing Scheduled
Vacs: Current.
Current Location: Knoxville, TN area
Contact: Peg or Deb

This is Kila. She is 2 years old, weighs between 35 and 40 pounds, but is not spayed. She loves people and other dogs - but not cats. She has not been around children, so this is an unknown. She was a stray who ended up at an animal shelter, but was rescued and has been a kennel dog for the last year. The kennel is closing and Kila has no place to go. The owner has asked for help in relocating her or she says she will have to put her down. She has until, at best, the end of February. Kila is not sponsored by any formal organization, so there are two of us trying to help. Kila is scheduled for her shots and heart worm testing on Tuesday, 2/12. Our last resort is to board her at another kennel, but we are praying that a foster or forever home will take her in because she desperately needs some TLC and a place to run and play. Please help Kila if you can, or please pass the info along to someone you know who might be able to. Contact either of us at the addresses above. Thank you.

Kila has not been evaluated by Heart of Dixie Akita Rescue, and is posting this liting as a courtesy to the foster caregivers. If you are interested in Kila, please contact either of them directly

Willa

"Nap Time"

Tracking Number: GA03240801
Date Listed: 3/24/08
Breed: Akita
Sex: Female.
D.O.B.: 2005
HW: Negative, on preventative
Vacs: Current.
Current Location: Guton, GA
Contact: Rachel Peeples, DVM

Willa is a 2.5 year old Akita. She was rescued as a puppy with her sister when a back yard breeder dropped them of at a shelter at three months of age. She weighs about 75 pounds and is a ball of energy. She has had both group and private training. She is crate trained and loves her toys. She was brought up around small children and she lives to please people. The problem is, as with many Akitas, she picky with whom she befriends in the dog world. She was raised with a male Akita and an older female chow. Although not recently, she has had problems getting along with them and shows signs of anxiety about other dogs when we are out on walks. It would seem that her perfect environment would be a home where she is the only animal with a fenced in yard in which she could play. She deserves the undivided attention and love that she gives every day.

If you are interested please contact Rachel Peeples, DVM.

Jasmine

"I'll blossom in your care - Jasmine"

Tracking Number: MS09170700
Date Listed: 9/17/07
Breed: Akita
Sex: Female, spayed.
D.O.B.: Unknown
HW: Positive
Vacs: Current as noted.
Current Location: Bay St. Louis, MS
Contact: Deb Parcel
Telephone: 228-468-4474 or 228-222-1344 (cell)

This girl still has a great zest for life. When Jasmine came to rescue she was at the lowest of lows. But with tender care, a good diet and a comfortable living space, she is starting to blossom back. She regularly woo-woos me in the morning, which is a very good sign of recovery. It is hard to tell Jasmine's age as she was neglected for so long and her teeth are not the best indicator. But she will brighten up the gloomiest day for your! Jasmine wants nothing more than to be part of a family again. Because of her unknown past, we need to say no to small children. Jasmine is spayed, but she is heartworm positive. In lieu of an adoption donation, we are asking the new adopters to assist with the cost of heartworm treatment instead. She has had her rabies vaccination but we are waiting for improved strength before the other routine vaccinations are given. Please look into her eyes and you will see the beautiful girl she can be through your loving hand.

Cayce

Cayce

"I have special needs. Cayce"

Tracking Number: TN06190600
Date Listed: 6/19/2006
Breed: Akita mix
Sex: Female, spayed
D.O.B.: 1/2006
HW: Neg.
Vacs: Current
Current Location: Sparta, TN
Contact: Heart of Dixie Akita Rescue
Telephone:

Poor Cayce was thrown from a car near a motel in Tennessee. She was so weak that she could hardly stand. A wonderful small dog rescue took her in until she could be transported to her Heart of Dixie foster home. She is a lovely girl -- fawn with a black mask and white markings. Cayce is very large -- 50 lbs at just under 4 months of age -- and very heavy boned. That combined with her heavy, flopped ears make us suspicious she may be mixed with St. Bernard or Mastiff. Cayce is very friendly to people but has shown typical Akita attitude toward strange dogs. She gets along well with the dogs she lives with (6 other Akitas and 1 Labrador) but does like to chase the household kitties. Cayce is deaf and will need a home committed to the extra management and special training needed for a deaf dog. She loves to give "paw" and will easily learn high five, shake, and salute if desired. She unfortunately has also been diagnosed with hip dysplasia -- poor girl was dealt a very poor set of genetic cards. If you think you can give this lovely girl the loving home she deserves please contact us! if you can meet her special needs, you will be well rewarded by her unconditional love!

Tracking Number:
Date Listed:
Breed: Akita
Sex: Female, spayed
D.O.B.:
HW: Neg
Vacs: Current
Current Location: Sneeds Ferry, NC
Contact:
Telephone:

Kia has a sad story like so many of our rescued animals. Her mother was being deployed to Iraq for a year and wanted to find Kia and their other dog a loving home. She is very well mannered, knows commands, and listens well. She walks well on a leash and she has done well adjusting to a new environment and new dogs. She has been great with my 3 year old son. She also does well with most other dogs. Kia is an older female (approx. 10 years old). We were told that she was seven, but the vet thinks she is probably older than that. She is solid white. She is a house dog and is housetrained. We would like for her to go to a home where she gets lots of exercise. She has arthritis and will need to be on medicine for that (I am giving her one Rimadyl per day). Other than that she seems to be in wonderful health. If you would like more information on Kia please contact her foster mom Tonia .

Kit

"I need a home!"

Tracking Number: GA02030800
Date Listed: 2/3/2008
Breed: Akita
Sex: Male
D.O.B.: 2006
HW: Neg., on preventative
Vacs: Current
Current Location: Guyton, GA
Contact: Rachel Peeples, DVM

Kit is a very gorgeous, sweet and active 2 year old male, dark brown with black overlay, black mask, and white markings. He is very assertive with other dogs but if the other dog is okay with this he is very playful with them. He is very responsive to training and needs just a little work to be a very well-behaved companion. He is current on vaccinations, heartworm negative, and neutered. Kit would make a great companion for an active individual or family. Because of his large size and exuberance he should not be unsupervised around small children.

If you are interested in Kit please contact Rachel Peeples, DVM. Kit is available for immediate adoption to an approved home.

Mac

Mack

"Mac the Dog"

Tracking Number: TN01020700
Date Listed: 1/5/2007
Breed: Akita mix
Sex: Male
D.O.B.: Unknown
HW: Neg.
Vacs: Current
Current Location: Sparta, TN
Contact: Heart of Dixie Akita Rescue

Mac was on his way to the gas chamber when he was brought into rescue. Although he was described as an Akita, we think he is and Akita/Rottweiler mix. But don't be intimidated by his rugged good looks. Mac is a very sweet boy, but needs obedience training to teach him how to be a polite dog. He is not super outgoing when you first meet him, so be prepared to take your time getting to know him. Get to know the breed before adopting. Akitas are incredibly loyal and must be handled with firm, but gentle nature. He is very good on a leash and appears to do best with men. This pet is located in Tennessee and can be possibly transported. All pets will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Can you be the one to give the time, love and attention he needs? Please see our Forms page for an adoption application.

Mongo

Mongo

"I'm Mongo"

Tracking Number: KY10280700
Date Listed: 10/28/2007
Breed: Akita
Sex: Male, neutered
D.O.B.: 2005
HW: Neg, currently on preventative
Vacs: Current
Current Location: Louisville, KY
Contact: Kelly Hanson
Other Information: - Approximately 2 years old-Approx weight is probably now around 110-120 lbs - Neutered Male all shots up to date - He has been on Heart worm preventative since Jan 2007(Interceptor) - He has been microchipped - he is potty trained and like most akitas very particular about cleanliness - He has been professionally trained for both obedience and aggressive behavior

Mongo was rescued from the Humane Society in Jan. 2007. His foster mom believes he lived with a family that did not know how to handle him. He was afraid and would cower if anyone moved or came near him, and showed aggressive behavior out of fear. His foster has been working with Mongo since Jan to build his confidence, gain his trust and work through the aggression, employing a nationally known trainer. He has responded slowly and has made some impressive accomplishments. If he has ever bitten anyone nobody is aware of it. He has not shown any aggressive behavior toward strangers, and will tolerate other animals at a distance. He has showed signs of wanting to play with them, but only on his terms. Mongo does not get upset if they are near him, will lick them affectionately occasionally but cannot be trusted and should be leashed when he is around them. His behavior around a female for any notable period of time has not been observed. I would not recommend a family with other pets or small children at this time. Mongo trusts his foster mom whole heartedly, is very affectionate toward her and will let her do anything to him. It takes him a while to gain his trust. With the exception of his foster, he will not always let other people take his toys or food away from him and she is still working on this behavior problem. Mongo will need to be with someone familiar with the breed, not easily intimidated by his size and gerth and who is willing to maintain his obedience to a degree that he does not forget and stray away from it. He is too large and powerful of an animal to not maintain control over. Mong continues to change for the good and with time should continue to exceed. His foster mom has invested a lot, both financially and emotionally in Mongo, and only wants to see him in the right home for him.

The Heart of Dixie volunteer who evalutaed Mongo stated that he was very sociable, and gave no indication of being aggressive toward her. Per her recommendation, Mongo will be considered only for homes with prior Akita, or similar breed, experience, where he can be the only pet, and without small children. The trainer is available to give his assessment to qualified candidates. Mongo will make a great companion for someone with the exerience, patience and comittment to help him reach his full potential.

Samson

Samson

"Samson"

Tracking Number: GA01090800
Date Listed: 1/9/2008
Breed: Akita
Sex: Male
D.O.B.: Est. age 3 yrs.
HW: Neg.
Vacs: Current
Current Location: Marietta, GA
Contact: Josh at Towne & Country Animal Clinic
Telephone: 770-971-1556

Samson was dropped off about two months ago at the Towne & Country Animal Clinic in Marietta, GA by his owner, who never came back to claim him. The staff at first thought about turning him over to animal control, but realized that he was a great dog that needed a chance to find a new home, and so decided to make him part of their Homeless Pets Foundation. However, life in a cage is not what he needs, and keeping him boxed up isn't going to do him any good. Like all Akitas, he can be a handful, and needs the daily exercise and mental stimulation that he can't get in his present situation. He's a very bright and beautiful boy, about three years old, neutered and up to date on his vaccinations. He displays the typical Akita traits of loyalty and willingness to guard his family, but as with many of his breed, can be dog-aggressive, and would do best as an only pet in a household that has prior experience with the breed.

Samson is not in the care of Heart of Dixie Akita Rescue and has not been evaluated by one of our volunteers, but is being listed as a courtesy to his caretakers. Please contact Josh at the clinic for additional information about Samson.

Tanner

Tanner

"Tanner"

Tracking Number: TN05030700
Date Listed: 05/03/2007
Breed: Akita
Sex: Male, neutered.
D.O.B.: 2001
HW: Neg.
Vacs: Current.
Current Location: Oak Ridge, TN
Contact: Bill Moore

Tanner is a very sweet and easy going older male who was surrendered to the shelter by his owner. He does not appear to be aggressive toward people or other dogs, so could work in a multi-pet household. When he was brought home from the shelter, he immediately hit it off with the resident yard pack - an old Siberian female and two young mixed breeds, one male, one female. It is unknown how he would react to cats, and has not been observed around small children. He is a light fawn with a black mask and white markings. Tanner is neutered, heartworm negative, and up to date on his vaccinations. He needs a permanent, loving home with an owner who will give him the training and attention he needs and deserves. He is available for immediate placement to an approved adopter.
